Nespole (Loquat)

A surprise for the month of May at Sezamo: one of the iconic fruits of the Mediterranean area, which you will find between the second half of April and the beginning of June in southern Italy (where they are called nespole or Maltese apricots), on the Mediterranean coast of Spain (where they are called Nisperos) and in Greece. It is a fruit similar to an elongated apricot, with four seeds stuck in a cross inside, with a fresh - sour taste, juicy. In Romania, Nespole has an autumn cousin, which we will meet more frequently in the west of the country, with later fruiting, in October, and which is called Mosmon or Mosmond. But let's not get bogged down and try the nespole fruits that are available NOW.

Nespole will not be easy to find in supermarkets, because it is not produced in huge quantities, has a short season, is not very well known by the general public and is also quite perishable, does not last many days. However, it is our suggestion for all those who want an authentic spring fruit and for those who miss the sun and the Mediterranean breeze.

If you notice some black spots or scars on the peel of the fruit, well these are a sign of full ripeness and not signs that the fruits are bruised or damaged inside.
