Ingredients

  • 2 cups of cooked and cooled rice (it's ideal to use cold rice, as it's more suitable for frying)
  • 2 tablespoons of vegetable oil
  • 2 cloves of garlic, minced
  • 1 onion, finely chopped
  • 200g of meat (shrimp or chicken/pork), cut into small pieces (optional)
  • 1 egg (optional)
  • 1 carrot, diced
  • 1/2 cup green peas or canned chickpeas
  • 2 tablespoons of soy sauce
  • 1 teaspoon of fish sauce
  • 1/2 teaspoon of curry powder
  • Salt to taste
  • Pepper to taste
  • 200g of meat

Optional Garnishes

  • Cucumber slices
  • Cherry tomatoes
  • Lime wedges

Instructions

  • 1
If using meat, pre-cook it in hot oil until golden and tender. After cooking the meat, remove it from the pan and set it aside. In the same pan, add another 1 tablespoon of oil, then add the onion and garlic. Sauté them until soft and fragrant.
  • 2
If you want to add egg to Nasi Goreng, make a space in the middle of the pan with the onion and garlic and crack the egg into it. Stir until cooked, then incorporate it into the rest of the ingredients.
  • 3
Add the carrot and peas to the pan and sauté them for a few minutes until they start to soften.
  • 4
Add the cooked and cooled rice to the pan and mix it with the other ingredients. Place over medium heat and fry everything together.
  • 5
Add soy sauce, fish sauce, curry powder, salt, and pepper. Mix well to ensure the rice is evenly coated with the flavors.
  • 6
Add the meat or shrimp (if using) and heat through
  • 7
Serve Nasi Goreng warm, garnished with whatever you like - typically, it's served with cucumber slices, tomatoes, or onion chips. You can also add egg yolk cut into strips or lime wedges to enhance the flavors.
Tip
Nasi Goreng is a versatile dish, so you can add or remove ingredients according to your preferences. It's an excellent option for a main course or for using leftover rice from another meal.
